What is executive search?
A retained, research-led form of recruitment. Search firms are paid upfront (25–33% of base salary) to fill senior roles exclusively, not competing with other agencies. Clients include Spencer Stuart, Russell Reynolds, and boutique specialists.
Firm structure
Researchers / Graduate Associates → Associates / Consultants → Principals / Directors → Partners / MDs. Entry level is research and market mapping. Partners win business and manage client relationships.
What entry-level roles involve
Market mapping, building longlists, writing candidate outreach, screening candidates, and supporting project delivery. Analytical, methodical, and relationship-focused work from day one.
Career progression & comp
Graduate: £35k + £10k bonus. Associate: up to £60k + 50% bonus. Consultant: up to £100k + uncapped bonus. Director: £70k + £50–100k. Partner: £100k+ base with significant bonus and often equity.
