How to Start Your Graduate Job Search When You Don't Know Where to Begin

One of the most common things graduates tell us is that they don't know where to start. Not that they don't want to work, or that they don't have ambition, just that the sheer size of the task makes it difficult to begin.

That's understandable. But it's also fixable.

Start with what you know, not what you want

Most graduates don't know exactly what career they want. That's fine. Start with what you do know: industries that interest you, types of work you've enjoyed, environments that suit how you operate. Use that as a filter rather than trying to reverse-engineer a perfect answer.

Talk to people before you apply

A fifteen-minute conversation with someone doing the job you're considering is worth more than ten hours of internet research. Most people are willing to speak to graduates who ask thoughtfully and specifically. LinkedIn makes this easier than it's ever been.

Give yourself a structure

A job search without structure becomes a source of anxiety rather than momentum. Decide how many applications you'll make each week, which days you'll do research, and when you'll follow up. Small targets, consistently hit, beat large targets you can't face.

Use a specialist recruiter early

If you're interested in commercial roles (sales, recruitment, research), speak to a specialist recruiter before you start mass-applying.
